Weekly Update | Sunday, February 11, 2012   Democrats, I've just returned from the State Committee meeting in Hot Springs.  The majority of the meeting focused on the road to the National Democratic Convention in Charlotte.  Check out www.arkdems.org for the complete selection process.  To be eligible to run and vote for a delegate position, you must file with the County Party on February 23-March AND file with the State Party May 14-18.  If you have any questions about this process, please let me know. Have you purchased your tickets for Democrats Rock, yet?  Don't delay; visit washcodemocrats.org to buy your advance tickets,$30 per adult, $10 per student.  The county committee and county candidate filing is scheduled for February 23rd- March 1st.  I will update the committee mid-week with the times volunteers will be taking your filing fee and assisting with the paperwork at the County Courthouse.  This year our County Filing fee increased to $30.00. I am excited about our February meeting presentation. Weekly Update | Sunday, January 15, 2012   Democrats, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter".  Those are inspirational words from Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech.  As Democrats, we stand up for those who do not have a voice.  Tomorrow, I'll be joining Representative Greg Leding, Vice-Chair Emily Ironisde and other advocates in Little Rock for the a statewide summit on the DREAM (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors).  I am eager to learn how we can help these extraordinary young people realize their dreams.  I pledge to never become silent about the things that truly matter.  More information at www.arkansasdreamers.org In other news, join the Washington County Democrats for a very important meeting on Monday, January 23, starting at 6:00pm.  Jean Wallace and Donell Meadows will be joining us from the Democratic Party of Arkansas with information about the 2012 Delegate Selection Plan. Our meeting will be held in the 5th floor conference room of the Washington County Courthouse. DREAM Summit | January 16th On Monday, January 16, 2012, concerned Arkansans will gather in our state’s capitol to commemorate Dr. Marin Luther King, Jr. Day with a statewide summit on the DREAM (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) Act. Almost a half century after Dr. King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech, the American dream continues to elude millions in this country, including youth – youth whose access to that dream is bound to their access to education. Inspired by Dr. King’s vision for equality and justice, Arkansas DREAMers and supporters have decided to convene the first Arkansas DREAM Act State Summit to discern collective goals for working to achieve the DREAM Act in our state and equal access to higher education for all Arkansas students. Discussion themes to be addressed at the Summit will include: an analysis of the DREAM movement in Arkansas, prospects for the introduction of state DREAM Act in 2013, and opportunities for regional and state awareness-building. A full agenda for that day will be made available in early January, and will entail strategic planning sessions, regional action plan development for 2012 and 2013, visibility events in Little Rock tied to the Martin Luther King, Jr., holiday and Latino voter engagement training. The Arkansas DREAM Act State Summitwill take place on January 16 from 10:00AM to 3:00PM at the Arkansas Education Association (AEA) building located at 1500 W. 4th Street in Little Rock.   It's time once again to welcome all of our kith and kin into our home to celebrate the joy of this blessed season. As always, we'll provide the meats, a few heavy hors d'oeuvres, as well as a selection of domestic beverages. We ask that you bring no gifts, but rather you...r favorites holiday side dish or dessert. If you do not cook, a bag of ice is always good! And, if your beverage tastes run more toward hard spirits, you should bring those as well. Once again, this is an open house, so you may come when you will and stay as long or short as you like. The management does, however, request that under no circumstances should you arrive before 7:00 pm (we may still be feeding dogs & cats, or still trying to get dressed for the party!). Party for Uvalde Lindsey Thursday evening November 8, 2011

Because Representative Lindsey is such a wonderful Representative and we know he will be an excellent Senator, I want to also provide you with some written directions to his Christmas Event which is tomorrow night (December 8th--Thursday) from 5:30 to 7 p.m.  I believe that map I sent will work.

 

Here is a little more to add; Turn off 71 and go down Township. Turn right at Meeks Lumber Company--take the road on the left that goes towards Tontitown--Follow that road to where the car dealership is--now what Uvalde added-- Going north from the stop light in front of Sam's and the Honda Dealership, it is 2.6 miles to Clear Creek Boulevard, the road turns up the hill next door to the Blessings Country Club gate house.  Go up the hill for 7/10s of a mile to St. Andrews Drive (just past a stop sign for the golf cart crossing) and turn left.  The Bolding house is at the bottom of the hill.

Senior Democrats of Northwest Arkansas will host a "meet and greet" of all of the announced, officially or unofficially, candidates for State Representative, State Senator, County Offices and Judge positions at the Tuesday, Nov.15, 11:30AM meeting at Western Sizzlin, Springdale.   This will be a fun and informative meeting with a focus on fundraising.

 

From Washington County Democrats:

Highway Bond IssueStatewide Interstate Highway Bond issue in on the ballot for Tuesday, November 8th.  The election is about whether or not to give the Highway Department authority to issue bonds to fast forward maintenance on Arkansas interstates.   It is important to point out that this is NOT a tax increase.  The source of funds that the Highway Department will use to repay the bonds is already on the books and won't go away — even if voters vote no on the bonds.  Early voting continues at the County Courthouse on Monday and proceeds to your regular polling place on Tuesday.

November Meeting
Washington County Democrats next monthly meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 21st at the Washington County Courthouse. Networking/social time will begin at 6:00 and official business and program at 6:30.   Dr. Janine A. Parry, University of Arkansas professor of Political Science and Director of the Arkansas Poll, will be our guest speaker. Dr. Parry will share the latest findings of the 2011 Arkansas Poll and discuss the current state of politics in the State and Nation.  RSVP via Facebook.

Holiday Party
Instead of our traditional Holiday Party, we have decided to make our celebration more serve driven, by assisting Peace at Home Family Shelter at their annual Santa Sack holiday event.    Santa Sack is an opportunity to support women and children who have successfully left abusive living arrangements. These families often struggle financially and the moms worry that their children will not have a Christmas because they simply cannot afford to buy presents.

Join your fellow Washington County Democrats as volunteer for this special program.  They need our help anytime between 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 9th.  To register to volunteer please respond to this e-mail.  After our service project, we will proceed to Legacy Blues Club for some social time.   We encourage you to participate in the great opportunity.

Meet and Greet with Ken Aden
Take an opportunity to meet with 3rd Congressional District candidate, Kenneth Wade Aden, on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, at 6:30pm.   The event is a low-key affair where you can meet with Aden and get the know the man who wants to be your next Congressman. PACNWA will host Political Analyst Charlie Cook on Friday, November 11.  Cook delivers election forecasts and rankings in his own publication, The Cook Political Report, and in other media venues. Cook writes two columns for National Journal, the "The Cook Report" for the main publication and "Off to the Races" for  National Journal Daily.  Since the 1984 presidential election, Cook has provided election night commentary for various television networks. He is a political analyst for the National Journal and NBC.   PACNWA will be on Friday, November 11th at 7:00am.  Cost of the event is $9.00 and includes a breakfast buffet.  RSVP required to rhudson@uark.edu.

The Benton County Democrats will welcome Lowell Grisham as their speaker at the luncheon meeting of the Benton County Democrats, Monday, Oct. 24. Grisham, Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Fayetteville, will discuss “Viewing Politics through the Lens of Jesus”. The group will meet at the WalMart Room, Bentonville Public Library, 405 S. Main. Street. Registration begins at 11:15 a.m., lunch at 11:30, followed by the speaker 12:00 noon.

A frequent columnist for the Northwest Arkansas Times, Grisham is a graduate of the University of Mississippi. His experience growing up in Mississippi in the days of the struggle for Civil Rights made a big impact on him, and Grisham left law school to enter the seminary in 1976.
